Planning Ahead: Understanding Senior Living Levels of Care

November 1, 2026

Why Planning Ahead Matters

Care needs can change gradually over months and years, or shift suddenly after a fall, a diagnosis, or a hospital stay. Families who have already thought through their options tend to handle that moment with far less stress than families who are starting from scratch.

Waiting until a crisis forces the decision often narrows the choices available. A rushed search, made during a hospital discharge or right after a fall, tends to focus on what has an opening today rather than what is the best long-term fit.

Planning ahead, even informally, means a family can choose based on what fits best, not just what is available on short notice. It also gives everyone involved, including the older adult at the center of the decision, more say in how that decision gets made.

Understanding the levels of care before they are needed also makes conversations with a parent or spouse easier. It turns a difficult, emotional decision into a series of smaller, more manageable ones, spread out over time instead of compressed into a single stressful week.

Understanding the Levels of Care

Senior living is not one-size-fits-all, and most communities offer a range of care levels designed to meet different needs.

Independent Living

Independent living is built for active older adults who want the convenience of maintenance-free living, dining, and community without daily care support. It suits someone who is largely self-sufficient but ready to leave home upkeep behind.

Assisted Living

Assisted living provides support with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and medication management, while residents maintain as much independence as possible. It is often the right fit when small daily tasks have become harder to manage safely alone, even if a resident does not need constant supervision.

Memory Care

Memory care offers specialized support for residents living with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia. Staff, programming, and the physical environment are all designed around the specific needs of residents facing memory loss, with an emphasis on safety, routine, and familiarity.

Nursing Care

Nursing care provides a higher level of medical and rehabilitative support, often following a hospital stay or for residents with more complex health needs. This level of care typically includes more frequent clinical oversight than assisted living or memory care.

Levels of Care Across The Village

Fairlawn, Green, and Wadsworth sit within easy reach of one another around Akron, and each offers its own mix of care levels. Fairlawn offers assisted living, memory care, and nursing care. Green offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care. Wadsworth offers assisted living and memory care.

If a resident's needs change and call for a level of care their community does not offer, they are not starting over with an unfamiliar place. Their family can look to one of the other Village communities, already part of the same familiar circle, to find that next level of care close to home.

How to Start the Conversation

The best time to talk about levels of care is before anyone urgently needs one. A calm conversation, without the pressure of a recent health event, tends to go better for everyone involved.

Start by asking what matters most: staying close to family, maintaining as much independence as possible, or having access to specialized care if needs increase. Every family's answer looks a little different, and that answer often points toward one level of care more clearly than a list of amenities ever could.

From there, a visit to a community and a conversation with staff can answer most of the remaining questions. Touring in person, asking about day-to-day routines, and meeting the people who would be providing care all help turn an abstract decision into a concrete, informed one.
